A Memorable Visit from the Cambrian Archaeological Association

At the beginning of July 2025, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming the Cambrian Archaeological Association to Plas Uchaf as part of their Summer Meeting (29 June – 4 July), a programme filled with archaeological visits, historical talks, and cultural exploration across North Wales.

The Cambrians, founded in 1846, are one of the oldest archaeological societies in the UK. Their aim is to research, protect and promote the rich heritage of Wales and the Marches. It was an honour to be part of their 2025 Summer Talks and to be included on a list alongside such distinguished historical sites such as Bodnant Garden, Nantclwyd y Dre, Gwydir Castle and Plas Cadnant.

The group arrived on a slightly overcast Tuesday afternoon, and it was quite the sight to see! A 40-seater coach carefully making its way down our winding farm track!

However, the real highlight was the time we shared with such a thoughtful, inquisitive and knowledgeable group of guests.

We were deeply proud to give a tour of Plas Uchaf’s historic 17th-century walled garden, our Grade II*listed home with it's connection to the Wynne and local farming families, and our position right on the shoulder of Mynydd y Gaer, a hill steeped in medieval significance. We exchanged stories, insights, and ideas, and we learnt as much as we shared.

One of the organisers later remarked:

"Everyone was very taken with both the property and your enthusiasm, and it was one of the highlights of the week. We purposefully hadn't said too much about it, so that it would come as a surprise, and it worked very well. It is a lovely house, and you have done a tremendous amount to the garden. Later in the week we saw the walled garden at Brynddu, Cemaes Bay, home of William Bulkeley the diarist, and between yours at Plas Uchaf and that at Brynddu we must have seen two of the earliest walled gardens in the area"

It was an incredibly proud moment for us and we look forward to welcoming more history enthusiast in the future.
