Restoring Plas Uchaf

THE ONGOING STORY

Looking after an old house and its landscape is never a finished project.

At Plas Uchaf, restoration means caring for the historic farmhouse, recovering the character of its walled garden, bringing neglected features back into use and understanding more about the place with every passing year.

It is careful, gradual work, shaped by the history of the farm and a desire to pass it on in good condition to the next generation.

01 / GARDEN RESTORATION

Recovering the walled garden

Behind the farmhouse lies a historic walled and terraced garden, registered by Cadw as a historic garden of special interest.

Over time, much of its original layout became obscured. Restoration has involved uncovering sections of the old paths, recovering the garden’s structure and bringing neglected features back into view.

The work is gradual, guided by the surviving evidence and a desire to retain the character of the garden rather than impose something new upon it.

Today, the garden continues to evolve, with its history informing every decision about what comes next.

02 / LANDSCAPE RESTORATION

Bringing the pond back to life

For years, the old farm pond had all but disappeared from view, surviving as little more than a trace in the landscape. In 2020, it was restored, bringing a lost feature of the farm back into the landscape.

The pond is part of a wider effort to care for the grounds around Plas Uchaf, from the orchard and meadows to the woodland and historic garden. New trees have been planted, existing habitats are cared for, and the landscape continues to develop alongside the farm.
